Golf, Oman Open: vince Sami Valimaki

(02/03/2020) E' stata una settimana sull'ottovolante, questo dell'Oman Open (valido per l'European Tour 2020) che si è svolto sul percorso dell’Al Mouj Golf (par 72): si tratta di uno dei più imporanti appuntamenti in questo peiodo della stagione che a conti fatti ha dato spettacolo facendo vedere bei duelli e performance di qualità. Oltre al dato sportivo (con dei testa a testa inusuali) c'è da considerare inevitabilmente l'aspetto sanitario: come vi spiegherò più avanti gli azzurri (Guido Migliozzi, Lorenzo Gagli, Edoardo Molinari, Renato Paratore, Andrea Pavan, Nino Bertasio e Francesco Laporta) hanno rischiato di non scendere sul "green" a causa del coronavirus o meglio a causa dei pregiudizi da coronavirus.

Per quel che riguarda il dato sportivo va detto che il torneo di Muscat (dal ricco montepremi di 1.750.000 dollari, circa 1.610.000 euro) non ha avuto un dominatore tanto che in più si sono alternati al vertice della classifica. Il primo a prendere il comando è stato proprio il "nostro" Migliozzi che aveva finito la prima giornata in vetta alla classifica con 66 (- 6) colpi.

A proposito dei nostri portacolori voglio sottolineare la infelice condotta degli organizzatori del torneo e delle autorità locali. Capisco la paura ma il loro comportamento non è stato per nulla accettabile. In sostanza a Muscat si era deciso di escludere i nostri (a partire da Gagli e Molinari) dalla competizione con misure precauzionali che andavano ben al di là della emergenza del coronavirus. Poi le cose sono parzialmente cambiate perché gli atleti sono risultati negativi al test. Voi direte allora tutto risolto. Neanche per sogno. Malgrado l'evidenza è rimasto, anche se in parte attenuato, l'atteggiamento di rigetto nei confronti dei nostri connazionali tanto che per loro era ugualmente prevista una inspiegabile quarantena: alla fine sono rinsaviti tutti e i ragazzi sono scesi sul green anche se non c'è da escludere che possano aver risentito, a livello prestazionale, di tutto questo bailamme.

Tornando alla gara. Come vi ho anticipato questo torneo non ha avuto un padrone tanto che sul finire della settimana la situazione di classifica si è fatta assolutamente incerta: dopo tre giri infatti, erano ben sei gli uomini appaiati al comando. Tra straordinarie rimonte e andamenti regolari, a -11 c'erano i finlandesi Sami Valimaki (il migliore di oggi, con -8, tutti birdie senz’alcun bogey) e Mikko Korhonen (-7), l’inglese Callum Shinkwin (-6), il sudafricano Brandon Stone (-5), l’olandese Joost Luiten (-5 anche per lui oggi) e il danese Rasmus Højgaard (-2).

Sami Valimaki alla fine è riuscito a prendersi l’Oman Open 2020: il finlandese, dopo aver concluso il torneo con 275 (74 67 64 70, -13) colpi alla pari con il sudafricano Brandon Stone (67 71 67 70), lo ha poi superato con un par alla terza buca di playoff rendendo così definitiva la classifica. Per il ventunenne finlandese è il primo successo tra i senior.

I risultati degli italiani nel torneo. Lorenzo Gagli ha fatto un buon torneo e si è classificato 10° con il punteggio di 280 (-8). (69 70 73 68), frutto di un eagle, quattro birdie e di due bogey. Più dietro invece gli altri italiani: Edoardo Molinari ha raggiunto il 50° posto chiudendo con 286 (-2) colpi. A premio anche Andrea Pavan che si è classificato 73° con lo score di 294 (+6). Renato Paratore è uscito dopo il terzo turno, piazzandosi 74° (218, +2) mentre Francesco Laporta e Nino Bertasio sono usciti al taglio terminando rispettivamente all’86° posto (146, +2) e al 110° posto (148, +4).

Il prossimo appuntamento sarà il 5/8 marzo per il Qatar Masters (Education City Golf Club, Qatar).

Round three report

Former champion Joost Luiten was part of a six way tie for the lead after 54 holes as the Oman Open got set for a Sunday shootout at Al Mouj Golf.

The Dutchman won the inaugural event in 2018 and a bogey free 67 on day three moved him to 11 under but he had plenty of company at the top of the leaderboard.

Finnish rookie Sami Valimaki carded a stunning 64, one shot better than countryman Mikko Korhonen who was also at 11 under. England's Callum Shinkwin bogeyed the last in his 66 to drop out of the solo lead, with South African Brandon Stone carding a 67 and Danish teenager Rasmus Højgaard signing for a 70 to complete the leading group.

Italian Guido Migliozzi was at ten under, a shot clear of French duo Adrian Saddier and Clément Sordet, and England's Jordan Smith. Sordet carded a 66, one shot fewer than Saddier and Smith to sit a shot ahead of Finn Kalle Samooja and two clear of Gallacher - who came home in 40 - two time Major Champion Martin Kaymer, Belgian Nicolas Colsaerts and England's Robert Rock.

Joost Luiten: “I had a good start with the birdie at the first but after that I just didn’t hole any putts. I created a lot of chances but they just wouldn’t drop. The funny thing is I had putts that were further away on 11 and 12 and they went in which kick started my round.

“It was always helps when you have won the tournament before but I think winning in general helps you go through the motions and the feeling of winning a tournament.

“I’m just going to enjoy it; you’ve got to enjoy the tension that comes with trying to win. I love it here and feel comfortable so I just need to make I play simple golf tomorrow.”

Brandon Stone: “It was a very solid round that was very consistent and to be bogey-free again is sensational for me. It was good fun out there with me and Guido having a few long drive contests which I obviously won! We had some great fun out.

“It’s been three amazing days on a great golf course with plenty of good scoring. I’ll probably head to the gym tonight and do some recovery work and maybe have a cup of coffee and an early dinner. I might watch a movie and I’m sure the wife will have something planned for dinner and then back on it tomorrow.”

Callum Shinkwin: “I played great. I had a couple of good spells on the front nine and the back nine, holed a few putts, so overall my whole game has been very good, so I just have to sort that last hole out and I should be doing quite well.

“I will just do all the same things. It is more about how I am on the golf course as opposed to trying too hard. It is quite easy to go out there and force the situation, so just let it happen and hope for the best.”

Rasmus Højgaard: “It was a grind out there today. I made some mistakes out there but bounced back with some birdies so I’m satisfied with my two under par. It was important for me to get those three birdies in a row after dropping three shots on the sixth and seventh. You can make bogeys out here so you just have to deal with it and move on.

“I had a good run on eight, nine and ten with some long putts but I also had a three putt out there which I’m trying to avoid. All in all, I’m happy with my game. I think it’s important that I’ve already won on the European Tour as there is going to be plenty of stress out there tomorrow. It’s just about how you can handle it and I think I’ll be prepared for tomorrow.”

Sami Valimaki: "I hit drives really good," he said. "I missed only one fairway on the last, missed one green and made some really good putts.

"Last year was my first pro year and I played really good. Won four times and made it onto the Challenge Tour before the Q-School started. It was all so fast and now I'll just keep pushing.

(16/01/2023) E' tornata come ogni quattro anni la Ocean Race. E' iniziata oggi la regala o meglio il Giro del mondo a vela, a tappe, per equipaggi. Emozionante la partenza da Alicante degli 11 team in gara divisi tra gli Imoca e i Vor65.
L’arrivo è per la prima volta nella storia di questa magnifica competizione previsto in Italia. A giugno 2023 dopo una navigazione di circa 32 mila miglia nautiche (attraverso l’Atlantico, l’Oceano Indiano e l Pacifico)) le imbarcazioni taglieranno il traguardo a Genova: la città ligure già da tempo sta preparando eventi speciali per accogliere le barche, gli staff, il pubblico, i media e tutti gli appassionati che vorranno essere presenti.

(15/01/2023) Scocca l'ora x, iniziano gli Australian Open 2023. Chi vincerà? Sopporteremo l'ennesima finale tra Nadal e Djokovic o (malgrado il forfait di Alcaraz) qualche giovane come Ruud e Tsitsipas riuscirà ad uccidere (sportivamente parlando eh) questi due padrini del tennis internazionale? Vedremo, una cosa è certa però: il tennis italiano è forte come non mai, le punte sono ovviamente Berrettini, Sinner e Musetti ma la pattuglia è nutrita e agguerrita e pronta a dare battaglia. Tra due settimane tireremo le somme, intanto buona fortuna agli azzurri e buon tennis a tutti noi.
